A holistic and more integrated approach are needed to address transboundary haze, as evolving climate patterns and increasing land-use pressures may result in the potential risks of fire and haze incidents. Speaking while chairing the 26th Meeting of the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution, the Minister Of Development said Brunei Darussalam has proactively implemented mitigation measures to combat haze and forest fires. Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid said that the measures include focusing on peatland conservation and sustainable environmental management.
The Minister of Development added that the country also strengthened coordination efforts to foster closer relationships, enhance understanding and promote active cooperation among all stakeholders on fire prevention and haze issues. The meeting was attended by ministers, senior officials and representatives for land, forest fires and haze from Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand as well as Timor-Leste as Observer. Also present was the Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat. The meeting, among others, reaffirmed its commitment to the full and effective implementation of the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution and noted the progress achieved in implementing the Second Roadmap for ASEAN Cooperation towards Transboundary Haze Pollution Control.
